Parks’ Value More than Just Aesthetic

Michael Kirschman, Division Director - Nature Preserves and Natural Resources for Mecklenburg County, NC recently published an article on the benefits of parks in the NACo Newsletter.  Michael is one of our NACPRO colleagues.  His article discusses the environmental, economic and health benefits of the county’s nature preserves.  He quantifies and reflects on how the county receives a significant return on investment in terms of water quality, air quality, tourism and other direct revenues.  He concludes that the Mecklenburg County park system provides a return on investment of nearly 350%, not including the water quality financial benefits and difficult to quantify health benefits.  Michael reports that this information was critical in Mecklenburg County last fall, despite the economic downturn, passing a $250 million park and recreation bond package, the largest in the state’s history.                       Archives
