County/City Park Department Merger
John Knight, Director of Parks and Recreation for Shawnee County announced that the County Parks Department and City of Topeka Parks and Recreation Departments will be merged into one agency. John will direct the consolidated department. The new park system will increase the size of the County department from 65 to 120 employees and parkland will double from 1500 +/- to over 3000 acres.
Nominations are now being accepted for NACPRO 2012 Awards. The presentation of awards will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Sunday, July 15 as part of the NACPRO Board of Directors summer meeting (NACo Annual meeting), which is scheduled for July 14-16. The annual event recognizes and honors excellence in county, regional, special district level Parks and Recreation throughout the nation. Award categories include park and recreation facilities, programs, planning, and professional and volunteer service. Agencies may submit more than one application. Please note that applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2012. (Award Program Description and Application)
