COUNTY YOUTH SERVICES RECEIVES DONATION FROM HARRIS TEETER

Leesburg, VA - Food market chain, Harris Teeter, Inc. donated $4,465 for two programs administered by the Youth Services Division of Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS). Of the total funds donated, $2,100 sponsored thirty-five elementary school age children in the county's "Fall Into Camp" program held when local public schools were closed on November 1-2, 2004. During the two-day camp, the campers took nature walks, created fall crafts, made hot apple cider & pop corn balls, and went on a field trip to a Loudoun farm where they fed animals, picked pumpkins and explored a hay maze. According to one of the sponsored campers, the time spent in camp was a "total blast" and he "had lots of fun while learning cool stuff."

The remaining $2,365 is designated for three special events for participants in the county's "Girls' Inc." program. This grant-funded program for teens is in its third year in Loudoun. The goal of the program is to alleviate juvenile delinquency in young women through building skills in resiliency and increasing self-confidence and self-esteem, as well as to offer and encourage support. With the donation from Harris Teeter, twenty-five girls will be able to take field trips to a rock climbing center and a WNBA game. In addition, the funds will cover instructional costs for a nine-week self-defense course for Girls' Inc. participants.

Harris Teeter, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ruddick Corporation, is headquartered in Matthews, North Carolina and currently operates in six states including Virginia. For more information about programs offered through the Youth Services Division of PRCS, please call 703-777-0358.
